A Sunbury man’s body was discovered in the Susquehanna River on the morning of Wednesday, August 31st.
The body of 38-year-old Carlos Ortiz was found by a kayaker. Ortiz’s body was located beneath the Edison Bridge, which is close to Sunbury, at about 8:00 a.m. The body was close to the water’s edge. A mountain bike that may have been Ortiz’s was found in a tree close to the scene.
Ortiz’s body was removed from the river by emergency crews. The death was confirmed by Northumberland County Deputy Coroner James Gotlob shortly before 11:00 a.m. The coroner later identified the body as Ortiz’s.
According to Northumberland County Coroner James Kelley, an autopsy will be conducted on Thursday, September 1st, at 8:00 a.m., by Forensic Pathology Associates at Allentown’s Lehigh Valley Hospital. Toxicology tests are also being done to help determine the cause of death.
The death is being investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police in Stonington. A Montoursville Forensics Services Unit assisted police at the scene. The Tioga Freedomist extends our thoughts and prayer to the family of the deceased.
